Reverse the tax cuts for the very rich.
Raise taxes on wealth instead.
To the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer,
Before the Mini-Budget our country was already in a state of dissatisfied division, where those with extreme wealth continued to prosper and those without were suffering the sharp end of the cost of living crisis. Even after your reversal on the top rate tax cut, that division has now been deepened; our economy is in freefall as a consequence of the decision to put more money into the pockets of the already very rich.
Let us be crystal clear: those of us with wealth, who believe in our country, do not want our taxes cut. We want the opposite. We do not want to be richer at the expense of our country. We want our country to be richer, stronger, and more resilient at the expense of us.
We ask that you REVERSE all tax cuts that benefit the very wealthiest people and the biggest companies. The British people and our public institutions cannot keep absorbing real term cuts while a select few benefit from your policies. RAISE taxes on our wealth instead. Use this as a sustainable investment for our shared, national interest.
The current plan has already damaged our economy and continues to pose future threats. The IMF states it will make our country more unequal. It will not deliver an increase to long-term investment or a sustainable future for us and for our children; it will not make our country more secure. Instead, the British people face increased economic pain - defaulting on mortgages, unable to pay their rent, unaffordable food and energy prices, British businesses pushed out of business. We face a more insecure, more brutal Britain.
This trend of cutting taxes for the very richest will cost us our country. We ask you again, reverse all the tax cuts you have introduced for us, the wealthiest people. Raise taxes on our wealth instead. Anything else is a reckless risk we cannot afford to take.
